Happy Thankgiving

Please note the following City closings for Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29:

Administrative offices and the Durango Public Library will be closed Nov. 28 and Nov. 29. Durango Transit also will not operate on these days.
The Recreation Center and Chapman Hill will be closed Nov. 28 only.
There will be no trash or recycling service on Nov. 28 and Nov. 29. See the pick up schedule for that week and the City's full holiday schedule.

ART North Progress

Take a peek at the progress being made on the Animas River Trail North extension! Crews are hard at work making sure the project is complete by summer 2020.

Holiday Rec Center Deals

The Durango Community Recreation Center is offering two punch pass specials this Holiday season. A Black Friday punch pass deal will be available Nov. 25 - Nov. 29. For that week only, a 25-punch pass will be available for the price of a 20-punch pass.

The Recreation Center is also offering discounted 10-punch Holiday passes valid Nov. 25 through Jan. 5. The pass is a good option for college students who are home for the holidays or family and friends visiting Durango. See price and registration information.

Airport Terminal Enhancements Complete

A ribbon cutting ceremony on Oct. 28 highlighted the completion of new enhancements to the Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) terminal. The project included installation of a new baggage makeup facility, modernization and expansion of airline offices - including new leasable space for additional airport service providers - and consolidation of TSA screening operations. Celebrate the Completion of SRWRF!

The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the recently completed Santa Rita Water Reclamation Facility project. The ceremony is Dec. 4 at noon at the facility site, 105 South Camino del Rio.

Speakers include City of Durango Mayor Melissa Youssef, former Mayor Sweetie Marbury and Interim City Manager Amber Blake. Tours of the new facility will be available. Be sure to also grab your commemorative SRWRF coffee mug!

Durango Recycles!

The City of Durango is a Gold Medal winner for the best city-wide recycling rate outside of the Front Range. Durango's work in diverting waste from the landfill was highlighted in the State of Recycling in Colorado report.

Thirty-three percent of waste generated in Durango in 2018 was recycled, according to the report. Durango's leadership in state recycling is the result of hard work on the part of the City's Recycling and Sustainability programs, and residents' dedication to reducing waste.

Catch Up on Council Connection

The Nov. 19 City Council meeting included robust public participation that included advocates of a plastic bag ban in Durango and individuals speaking in favor of the proposed pedestrian bridge over 32nd St. Watch the November 19, 2019 episode of Council Connection for more highlights.

MYAC Gives Back

High school students on the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC) dedicated their Saturday earlier this month to helping build a new trail in Durango. Their efforts in partnership with other organizations will result in a project the whole community will enjoy.

MYAC encourages youth participation in City government and helps young people develop citizenship skills and a desire to give back to their community. MYAC is comprised of nine student members appointed to one-year terms.

Snow Routes & Sidewalks

When snowfall is heavy, the City may enact Snow Routes - streets designated as important routes for safe travel. These routes are high priority for plowing and snow removal. Vehicles may be towed if they are not moved when Snow Routes are enacted. To avoid this, don't park on a Snow Route if it snows more than two inches, and find off street parking if you are leaving for an extended period of time. See a map of designated Snow Routes.

Also, remember that owners/occupants of properties adjoining a public sidewalk are responsible for removing snow and ice from the sidewalk. It is against City code to move snow or ice onto City streets, unless it is being removed from the public sidewalk.

Pumpkin Drop-Off a Big Success

This year's Pumpkin Drop-Off, hosted by the City's Sustainability Program and community partners in Durango and Bayfield, was the biggest yet! In Durango, 600 pumpkins, weighing more than 4,500 pounds, were dropped off at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

The pumpkins were given to local farmers to use as pig feed. This reduced the number of pumpkins eaten by wandering bears, or ending up in landfills, and made for some very happy pigs!
