Pumpkin Dropoff

Pumpkin drop off on Friday and Saturday

The City of Durango Sustainability Division is partnering with The Good Food Collective, Bear Smart, and the CSU Extension Office, as well as local farmers and ranchers to host the annual pumpkin drop-off on the Friday and Saturday after Halloween.

Residents are encouraged to drop off jack-o-lanterns and other festive fruits between 12pm and 6pm on Friday, November 2nd or between 9am and 2pm on Saturday, November 3rd at one of two locations:

  • La Plata County Fairgrounds 2500 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301
  • City of Durango Three Springs Police Substation 545 Wilson Gulch Drive, Durango, CO 81301
Please ensure all fruits are free of candles, wax, paint and bleach prior to drop-off.

New for 2018: the La Plata County Fairgrounds location will also feature games, a prize for the heaviest pumpkin, and leaf drop-off. Drop off unsprayed, bagged leaves for collection by Table to Farm Compost. Donating pumpkins as animal feed is a more sustainable option than leaving them on your porch or tossing them in the trash. By donating the pumpkins, you help keep rotting pumpkins from acting as a bear attractant or ending up in the landfill. This event provides a responsible disposal alternative. If more pumpkins are received than the hungry hogs can manage, the surplus will be composted.

Do you remember the WWII quonset huts in northwest Durango?

On November 22, 1949, Council decided to ask the U.S. Public Housing Administration for title to 20 quonset huts.  A week later the City had received the Housing and Home Finance administrator’s offer to relinquish to the City its interest in these units.  By 1950, the City was selling the quonset huts.

Want to read about it in the meeting minutes? You can find the City Council meeting minutes online by searching the City Records, or conduct a keyword search for quonset huts.
