New City Manager selected

Council Selects New City Manager

City Council unanimously voted on August 21 to move forward with a contract with Jose Madrigal to be the new City Manager. Thank you to all community members and stakeholders who participated in the virtual Meet & Greet with finalists on August 19. 

“I want to thank the City Council for their support and trust. I am eagerly looking forward to working with them and the City staff," Madrigal said. 

"During the interview process I was impressed with just how special the community is and how talented the City Staff are. The Community has already been so welcoming to my family and I and we are thrilled to call Durango home.”

Labor Day Schedule

City Labor Day Schedule

  • City administrative offices and Durango Public Library will be closed Monday, Sept 7.
  • The Recreation Center will be open 6 am - 2 pm. Durango Gymnastics will offer regularly scheduled classes. Lake Nighthorse will be open 7 am - 7 pm.
  • Residential and commercial trash/recycling will occur as scheduled.
  • Durango Transit WILL operate, and parking at meters will be FREE on Labor Day.

Council Connection for July 7, 2020 Meeting

Catch Up on Council Connection  

At the September 1, 2020 City Council meeting Council directed City staff to proceed with a special event permit for a temporary Black Lives Matter memorial at Buckley Park. Council also directed staff to draft a lease for a homeless transitional camp adjacent to Greenmount Cemetery. The lease will be introduced at Council's September 15 meeting. See more highlights in the September 1, 2020 episode of Council Connection.

The next regular City Council meeting is Tuesday, September 15 at 6:30 pm. The public is invited to join the virtual meeting and provide comments. Find a complete agenda with Zoom link at DurangoGov.org/meetings. Oxbow Park Open

Oxbow Park and New Section of ART North are Open!

Durango Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce the opening of Oxbow Park river access and a new segment of the Animas River Trail. The open section of trail is from East 36th Street to Oxbow Park and Preserve. Special amenities at Oxbow Park include parking, a paved boat launch and restrooms. The City thanks adjacent neighbors and community members for their patience throughout construction.

The portion of Animas River Trail from Animas City Park to East 36th Street remains closed for construction. Please respect all construction fencing and signage.

Household Hazardous Waste Event

Diverting Hazardous Waste

The City of Durango and La Plata County are partnering to host a Household Hazardous Waste collection event Saturday, September 19. Commercial waste will be accepted on Friday, September 18 by appointment. Call (970) 764-5796 for more information. 

In 2016, the Household Hazardous Waste Event resulted in the diversion of over 28,000 pounds of hazardous waste from the landfill. See details on what will be accepted at the 2020 event.

Airport Construction

Terminal Apron Construction

Construction is moving along on the rehabilitation of the Durango-La Plata County Airport terminal apron. This project addresses deteriorating asphalt on the apron. Commercial airlines will have uninterrupted access throughout construction. Four Corners Materials, A CRH Company, is employing over 50 individuals in support of this project.

Library App

There's an App for That!

Durango Public Library customers can now access library services and materials on their personal devices via a new mobile app. The app is available in the Google Play and iOS App stores (search "Durango Public Library”). Customers can use the new app to browse the online catalog, place items on hold for curbside pickup, access the Library's digital collection and more.

2020 Clean Commute Week

Clean Commute Week Goes Virtual!

The City will host a series of virtual events the week of September 21 capturing the spirit of Clean Commute Week and Bike to Work Day. The festivities, normally held in June, were cancelled last spring due to COVID-19. 

The City is working on a schedule of activities that will allow the community to celebrate Clean Commute Week safely and responsibly. Activities will include scavenger hunts, prize drawings, virtual rides and a twist on the Commuter Challenge. Watch for details at GetAroundDurango.com. Businesses are invited to get involved by hosting a virtual event or ride, offering special discounts for participants or helping spread the word. Leisure Pool Open

Leisure Pool is Open

The leisure pool at Durango Community Recreation Center is open for family/open swim. Starting September 8, pool hours will be Mondays-Thursdays 12-4 pm, Fridays 12-6 pm and Saturdays 9 am-4:30 pm. Find more information, including pool rules and restrictions, here.
