Durango, CO: The City of Durango received 205 applications for its inaugural E-bike rebate program, which is significantly more applications than available funding.
Forty-five general rebates were accepted, and 18 income-qualified rebates were accepted. In total the program received 205 applications. The program incentivizes residents to switch to electric bicycles to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and carbon emissions.
Applications for the program were accepted until May 12. $13,600 was available for the general rebates; $28,000 was available for the income-qualified rebates. Because of the high demand, the city will use a lottery system to award the rebates, said Marty Pool, the city’s sustainability manager.
“This level of interest far exceeded our expectations,” he said. “Our best estimates are that the total number of applicants represents about 1 out of every 40 eligible households. The interest in this program was so strong that it outpaced funding.”
While the program has been a general success, there is still work to secure more funding for future rounds of rebates. The application window is now closed, but the City of Durango encourages those interested in purchasing an e-bike to explore other available rebate programs. One such program is the LPEA e-bike rebate program, found at https://lpea.coop/outdoor-electric-equipment-rebates-e-bikes-rebates.
Additionally, the State of Colorado will soon announce its Community Access to Electric Bicycles Rebate Program details, so residents may wish to wait until more information is available before purchasing.
