Durango, CO: The city of Durango will hold a meeting May 23 at 5 p.m. in Rooms 1 and 2 at the Durango Public Library to share design plans and receive public comment on the MidTown Safety and Connectivity Improvement Design Project conceptual alternatives.
The project scope includes 13th through 15th streets, East 2nd Avenue and the intersection of Florida Road, 15th Street and East 3rd Avenue. The conceptual design has two alternatives for most blocks and the Florida Road, 15th Street, and East 3rd Avenue intersection.
“The MidTown area is a major connection pinch-point for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motor vehicles to downtown Durango from the north,” said Devin King, multimodal administrator for the city. “The intersection
of East 2nd Avenue and 15th Street is our highest-volume intersection for bicyclists and pedestrians measured in our biannual survey, with many of those traveling to downtown.”
This project is intended to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists by creating a two-way cycle lane from Rotary Park to 13th Street, improving intersections on East 2nd Avenue with curb extensions, and improving sidewalks and curb ramps. Intersection improvements are also being designed for the Florida Road, 15th Street, and East 3rd Avenue intersection.
“This is a complicated design and we are trying to strike the best balance between improving the safety and connectivity while minimizing the impact to local businesses,” said King.
Funding for this design project comes from the 2015 Half Cent Sales and Use Tax. For more information, call (970) 375-4955 or visit the city’s website.
