Joint project between the city and Durango Mesa Park Foundation to build new mountain bike trails

Durango, CO: Durango Mesa Park Foundation and the city of Durango have announced plans to start work on a new mountain biking trail project this April. The joint effort with the City, Durango Mesa Park Foundation, Durango Trails, AJ Construction and other local builders will include five new trails and improvements to the trailhead for Horse Gulch.

The project will include a 2.15-mile connector from Durango Mesa Park to the Horse Gulch Trailhead, three intermediate downhill trails, a beginner downhill trail, and a new connector from Durango Mesa Park to the Telegraph trail.

The project is part of a larger effort to promote outdoor recreation in the area and to provide more opportunities for mountain bikers of all skill levels to enjoy the scenic trails around Durango. Expanding the trail system is expected to attract visitors from all over the region and provide a boost to the local economy.

"There are a lot of moving pieces and it's a very complex project," said Ture Nycum, the city's director of Parks and Recreation. "The foundation is going through the annexation process right now. We're still trying to understand the infrastructure and other costs, but we are very excited to break ground on this trail project in the meantime."

The project is slated to begin in April, and the city and the foundation are working closely with local officials and stakeholders to ensure that the new trails are safe, sustainable, and accessible to all. The improvements to the trailhead will also make it easier for visitors to access the trails and enjoy the beautiful scenery.DMP-007_Open_House_Signage-Process_0308c

Durango Mesa Park Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting outdoor recreation opportunities in the area. The foundation has been working closely with the city and the community to develop the new trails and to ensure that they are built to the highest standards with materials that require minimum maintenance.

"We're thrilled to be working with the city on this exciting project," said Moira Compton, spokeswoman for the Durango Mesa Park Foundation. "Mountain biking, running and hiking is a big part of the outdoor recreation scene in Durango, and we're excited to provide more opportunities for people to get out and enjoy the trails."

New mountain biking trails and improvements to the trailhead are expected to be completed later this year. For more information, visit the Durango Mesa Park Foundation website or contact the city's Parks and Recreation department.
