January 2023 crime stats stay consistent

Durango, CO: January’s crime statistics for 2023 in the city stayed consistent year over year, with 55 total offenses committed, just one more than the 54 offenses in January 2022.

Aggravated assault was up this past month, with nine offenses committed in January compared to two in January 2022. In two of the aggravated assault cases police officers and Mercy Regional Medical Center employees were victims.

"After reviewing all aggravated assault incidents, no obvious pattern emerged," said DPD crime analyst Tessa Reinhart. "All were separate, unrelated incidents."

Auto theft is a high priority for the Durango Police Department, but there were only three reported auto thefts in January. All three vehicles were recovered.

Accidents were up significantly, coinciding with the heavy snowfall Durango experienced compared to last year. This January there were 61 reports of accidents, versus 27 in January 2022.

“We saw a significant increase in traffic related crashes due to the roads and weather,” Reinhart said.

Theft was down around 20% when compared to January 2022. Ten of the 36 reported were specifically shoplifting incidents.
