Candidate signatures due February 7, 2023

Durango, CO: Prospective city council candidates in the upcoming April election have until 3 p.m. Feb. 7 to turn in the 25 verified signatures required to be placed on the ballot.

Although 25 signatures may seem a small number, the signatures must be verifiable registered electors of the City of Durango.

Some examples of signatures that will not count:

  • The signer uses a nickname rather than their legal name (Chas versus Charles; Billy versus William etc.).
  • The signer hasn’t updated their address with voter registration and has moved since the last election.
  • The signer fails to include the street designation (street, avenue, lane, etc.  Many streets have the same name but a different designation).
  • The signer fails to include their unit number or apartment number.
  • The signer lists a post office box rather than a residential address.
  • The signer’s printed signature is unreadable.

“Our audit trail must show that we can prove that the person signing the petition is the same person who is registered to vote as an elector of the city,” said Durango City Clerk Faye Harmer. “Our office will always err on the side of the voter; however, we are tasked to verify not with what we know, but what we can prove,” said Durango City Clerk Faye Harmer.

Prospective candidates must schedule an appointment with the City Clerk to pick up a candidate packet at City Hall. Only after that meeting can signatures be collected.

There are two city council seats up for election in April. Mayor Barbara Noseworthy and Councilor Kim Baxter are not running for re-election.
