Volunteer Program

Volunteering with the Police Department

The Durango Police Department encourages volunteers from our community to assist us in day-to-day operations. Volunteers can be an important part of any organization and are proven a valuable asset to law enforcement agencies. Volunteers help to increase police responsiveness, service delivery, and information input. They can also be a bridge to the community.

Volunteers are a huge asset for a law enforcement agency, especially during tighter budgets. A well-known principle of volunteerism is an increase in efficiency for the department and improved service to the community, as a result of volunteers who support public safety and work to enhance the quality of life for every person in our community.

Currently, we have several volunteers who assist us with a wide range of tasks including fingerprinting and data entry. These volunteers assist us in the office and in the field. We try to match up volunteers' individual skill sets with tasks that are rewarding and challenging. Due to the sensitive nature of many tasks given to volunteers, they must complete a full background investigation before being allowed to volunteer.

If you would like to join our team as a volunteer please see this application (PDF). You must also fill out an application with the City of Durango.
