Selection Process
Recruit Selection
A police officer position requires a comprehensive testing process including written and physical exams. Testing for the officer eligibility list is done on an as needed basis and is by invitation only from among applications received. Once scheduled, applicants can expect the testing process to occur in a single day.
Written Exam
The written exam is a three-part video-based testing. The applicant will be tested on judgement and human relations, report writing, and reading. No prior law enforcement experience is needed to complete the exam.
Clerical Exam
The clerical exam includes: typing, alphabetizing, numerical comparisons, and spelling/grammar. All exams are timed.
Physical Exam
The location of this exam is dependent upon weather. The physical exam includes:
- 25 sit-ups completed within one minute
- 25 push-ups completed within one minute
- 100 yard dash completed within 15 seconds
- One mile run completed within 10 minutes
Suitability Review
The suitability interview consists of a one on one interview with a psychologist. The applicant will be asked questions to see if they are suitable for the job of police officer. This part will also include written multiple choice personality tests.
Upon completion the applicant will be assessed to see if they will continue in the process. Applicants who are recommended to continue will be ranked based on a variety of factors. Some of the factors considered are the scores the applicant received during the testing process as well as his or her P.O.S.T. certification status, law enforcement experience, education and military service. The highest ranking applicants will continue into background checks.
